Sweet Home Alabama

So we have always appreciated that homeschooling offers us the freedom to travel when we want or need to, last year we did our Midwest Midwinter Tour, visiting Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.   This  year we're going a little further south and for a little longer.  We've been singing "Sweet Home Alabama" for 2 weeks now and will continue for another 3 1/2 months.  We even got to experience an Alabama "snow storm" which my Maritime friends would have described as "light flurries".  It managed to close schools, the army post (including the gas station). Back home they wouldn't have even granted indoors recess for this weather ;)



As a result of our trip our homeschool studies will include state studies and rockets (since we are staying in Rocket City Huntsville, Alabama).   We have already been learning about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., the Birmingham bus boycott which led to a discussion on slavery, the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman. One of the things I love about our style of homeschooling is that we follow the kids' interests and use what's available. The post library in Huntsville has tons of interesting information about people from Alabama so we have found beautiful books about Rosa Parks, the Tuskagee Airmen and Helen Keller to name a few.  Next we will be exploring NASA and the space program, can't wait!
